“The Provocateur Auteur Negotiates National Cinema at the Transnational Film Festival: Fassbinder’s Despair (1978)”
Jaimey Fisher
Professor of German and Cinema & Digital Media
This paper takes up a late work of Fassbinder’s that signaled a new direction for his incredibly prolific productivity, an English-language transnational production, Despair (1978). Fassbinder’s Despair was based on a Nabokov novel, scripted by Tom Stoppard, and acted, as a lead, by Dirk Bogarde, but the scholarship on the film has neglected a key aspect of its transnational operations, namely, its festival premiere and context.
