Mathilda Grosse
German Class of 2026
What was your major/minor? Why did you choose it?
I was a Psychology and German double major. I chose these two majors because they provided a balance of STEM and humanities classes.
What are you up to now?
Up until recently I was working in the mental health field as a behavioral technician at an addiction rehabilitation facility. I have just moved to Germany and hope to continue in the mental health field but am currently looking into jobs teaching English here.
How did your experience at UC Davis prepare you for the next step in your academic and professional journey?
My experience doing a German major has helped ease my transition moving abroad and provided me with useful connections and mentorships.
What's your advice for someone considering your major?
My advice to anyone considering to do a German major or minor is to try taking a few classes and see how you like it. You don’t have to commit to a minor or major right away, and if you decide not to do it you still gained valuable experience and likely got to take a cool class you otherwise wouldn’t have heard about.
What was your favorite part of your undergraduate program here?
My favorite part of the German undergrad program was the variety of classes you can take to fulfill the major requirement. Through this major I was able to take film, history, and literature classes that I would otherwise not have been exposed to.
What are you most proud of from your undergrad experience?
I am proud of my involvement in the German department as the former peer advisor, as well as helping run the German club in order to maintain a strong community of German speakers at UC Davis.
Do you have a professor or a class you want to shout out?
Professor Krimmer and Professor Harjes were both attentive and passionate mentors during my time in the German department. I particularly enjoyed the film classes that they taught.
What were you involved in outside of class (clubs, internships, etc.)?
Outside of class I was involved in the German club, the student run chicken coop/rescue, and my work in the mental health field.
