About the program
The UCDavis German Department
offers:- Comprehensive training
While many departments across the U.S.
have abandoned the earlier periods altogether,
our Department focuses on the whole spectrum
of German literature and culture from the
Middle Ages to the present. Our goal is to
provide students with a sound basis in all
areas of German literature (in addition to
individual research interests) to help meet
the need of American universities for solid
generalists who can teach a wide range of
courses. At UCD, students will have one of
the top German research libraries in the state
at their disposal. - Special emphasis
on the education of scholars and teachers
Our
TA-training program has repeatedly been recognized
as one of the finest in the country. The combination
of solid training in literature and foreign
language pedagogy has led to a superb placement
record for our doctoral candidates, who have
been able to obtain positions at UC Santa
Cruz, the University of Kansas, Reed College,
Brandeis, and Washington University, St. Louis,
to name but a few. - Broadened opportunities
for a designated emphasis
Our Department
encourages students to add a designated emphasis
to their primary field of Germanistik. In
accordance with their interests, they may
choose additional course work in Classics,
Critical Theory, Feminist Theory and Research,
or our most recent option, Second Language
Acquisition. - Excellent internships
for our undergraduate and graduate students
They
include in-house training in Business German
and advanced literature courses as well as
placement during the summer months with major
companies primarily in Germany and Switzerland
under the auspices of the International Education
Program. - Study abroad opportunities
for our undergraduate and graduate students
The
Department maintains agreements with Heinrich-Heine-Universität
in Düsseldorf as well as other German
universities in Berlin and Göttingen
through the UC Education Abroad Program.
