Internships in German-Speaking Countries

During the summer students can participate in 10-week internships in Germany and Switzerland in a wide variety of jobs in business and industry as well as in the service sector. The German Department allows 8 units of credit for participants.

The Director of this program is Dr. Günter Seefeldt. Information about this program is available at the German Department and from Dr. Henderson, 409 Sproul Hall.

Teaching Assistants (TA) / Associate Instructors (AI)

Graduate Studies in German leading to the M.A. and Ph.D degrees are supported by TA-ships and fellowships. For further information, contact the Graduate Program Assistant, Kay Green, 611 Sproul Hall; skgreen@ucdavis.edu

Overall Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Current minimum overall GPA of 3.0
  • Full-time graduate student
  • SPEAK test of oral English proficiency (for international graduate students only)

Criteria for Changing from TA to AI

  • Possession of a master's degree and at least one year of teaching experience at UC Davis, including any time served as a Teaching Assistant. Completion of 30 units of graduate work will be considered equivalent to completion of a master's degree.
  • Good academic standing that meets the eligibility requirements to hold academic appointments

Applying for Teaching Assistantships

Complete the Application for Teaching Assistantship (Teaching Assistantship Application ), and send it with the application for admission and supporting materials.

Continuing Teaching Assistants/Associate Instructors

Continuing students with teaching positions will be contacted in early spring for information about their plans for the next academic year, including their desire to continue their teaching appointment.

Information from the TA Handbook

  • Pay Period: TAs/AIs are paid in 3 equal installments per quarter. For the Fall Quarter, the TA/AI will receive paychecks November 1, December 1, and January 2.
  • Fee Remission: Graduate students hired as TAs, AIs, Readers or Tutors, at 25% or greater time receive 100% remission of their in-state educational and registration fees. Note: these students are still responsible for paying some local campus fees. They also receive Student Health Insurance Program (SHIP) remission.
  • Fee Deferrals: Students may sign up in the Student Aid Accounting Office to have any registration and educational fees due deducted from their first paycheck of each quarter. Students must provide written employment verification from the department, including title of position, percentage of time appointed and appointment dates. There is a processing fee for this service.
  • TA Loan Fund: There is also a TA Loan Fund to assist TAs over the lean period at the beginning of the quarter. It is administered by the Short Term Loan Office (located in the Financial Aid Office). Schedule an appointment to apply: (530) 752-9246.
  • Moving Expenses: TAs who are appointed at 50% time for the full academic year and who move to Davis from outside of California may receive partial compensation for their moving expenses based on the approximate air miles from the point of origin to UC Davis.
